What is the CLOE certification and who is it for?

The CLOE (Compétences Linguistiques Orales et Écrites) is a language certification issued by CCI France. It is intended for employees, jobseekers and individuals wishing to certify their level in a professional context. Linguaphone is a CLOE-accredited centre and offers the certification in 6 languages: English, German, Spanish, French as a Foreign Language (FLE), Italian and Portuguese. CLOE assesses oral and written skills for work situations such as writing emails, participating in meetings or negotiating.

Which CEFR levels does CLOE cover and how long is it valid?

CLOE covers all CEFR levels, from A1 to C2. The test provides a precise score and associated CEFR level. Like most language certifications (TOEIC, Linguaskill), validity is 2 years on a CV to remain representative of the real level. Note: for everyday professional situations, B2 is generally expected; for international roles with responsibility, C1 is highly valued.

Is CLOE eligible for CPF funding?

Yes. CLOE is registered with the Specific Repertory of France Compétences in each of the 6 languages (English: RS6435, German: RS6436, Spanish: RS6437, FLE: RS6438, Italian: RS6439, Portuguese: RS7412). Preparation courses are therefore eligible for CPF, OPCO, France Travail, etc. Since the decree of 26 February 2026, CPF funding for language training is capped at €1,500 with a mandatory personal contribution of €150. For any CPF-funded training, sitting the CLOE certification is mandatory.

How does the CLOE exam work?

The CLOE exam includes a written test (reading comprehension, written expression, grammar and vocabulary in a professional context) and an oral test with an examiner (listening comprehension, spoken expression, interaction). The exam is entirely online, with a flexible format (sessions available throughout the year). Results are delivered quickly with a precise score and corresponding CEFR level. The registration fee is included in the training package at Linguaphone.

How long does it take to prepare for CLOE with Linguaphone?

Depending on your starting level and target, preparation averages 30 to 60 hours of one-to-one training with a native or bilingual trainer, complemented by self-study on our digital platform. Before starting, we run a free placement test (written and oral) to calibrate the pathway. Training is available remotely (video, phone) or in person in Paris, Lyon and Mulhouse, in English, German, Spanish, FLE, Italian and Portuguese.

What is the difference between CLOE and the TOEIC or Linguaskill?

The TOEIC and Linguaskill are certifications specific to English, issued respectively by ETS Global and Cambridge. CLOE is a French certification from the CCI, available in 6 languages, making it the reference option for assessing German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese or FLE within a CPF framework. It is particularly suited to company skills development plans for languages other than English.
