The Civic Examination: official assessment for residence permits
Are you applying for the first time for a multi-year residence card, a resident card in France or French nationality?
The Civic Examination is an official test, designed by the French Ministry of the Interior, which assesses knowledge of French society, its values and how it works.
This examination becomes compulsory in France from 1 January 2026, for first applications for a multi-year residence card, resident card or naturalisation.
NB: The Civic Examination certificate is not required for renewal applications. The Civic Examination does not apply to those submitting a first application for a Temporary Residence Card (CST).

Test format — duration: 45 minutes, 40 questions (computer-based MCQ)
Topics covered: principles and values of the Republic, institutional and political system, rights and duties, history, geography and culture, living in French society.

The Ministry of the Interior presents the official list of questions.
Results
Results are sent by email by CCI Paris Ile-de-France within a few days to 1 week.
The results certificate is valid indefinitely. The digital certificate is recognised and accepted by Prefectures.
