Exam format
The Goethe-Zertifikat consists of four independent modules: Lesen (reading), Hören (listening), Schreiben (writing) and Sprechen (speaking). For B1, B2 and C1 levels, you can sit the full exam in one session or only the modules you still need, which is helpful for targeted retakes.
| Level | Lesen | Hören | Schreiben | Sprechen |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| B1 | 65 min | 40 min | 60 min | 15 min (in pairs) |
| B2 | 65 min | 40 min | 75 min | 15 min |
| C1 | 65 min | 40 min | 75 min | 20 min |
Preparation guidance by level
Preparation time depends on your starting level. As a guide, plan around 60 to 90 hours to aim for B1 from a confirmed A2, 90 to 120 hours for B2 from a solid B1, and 120 to 150 hours for C1 from a stable B2. Our flipped-classroom method paired with our digital platform saves around 30% of time compared with the 200 hours the Council of Europe estimates per CEFR level move. Before you start, we run a free placement test (written and oral) to calibrate the pathway.
Logistics in Mulhouse
The written exam takes place in the morning between 9am and 12:30pm. The time for each module is specified on your convocation. The order of the oral exam is communicated on the day, unless you are registered only for the oral exam.
Results are sent by post within 15 working days.
