What is the TEF IRN and who is it for?

The TEF IRN (Test d'Évaluation de Français pour l'Intégration, la Résidence et la Nationalité) is an official French test issued by Le français des affaires (CCI Paris Île-de-France). It is intended for people engaged in French administrative procedures: naturalisation application, long-stay residence card, multi-year residence permit, Republican Integration Contract. Linguaphone is a TEF IRN accredited centre and runs sessions in Mulhouse, at 4 rue Fredo Krumnov.

Which levels does the TEF IRN assess?

The TEF IRN assesses CEFR levels A1 to B2, on a scale of 0 to 499 points. Since 1 January 2026, the level required is B2, in both speaking and writing, for a naturalisation application, B1 for a 10-year resident card and A2 for a multi-year residence permit. A level is reached if you obtain the threshold score on 3 of the 4 papers, with a tolerance on your weakest paper. Results are valid for 2 years.

How does the TEF IRN exam work: format, duration, price?

The TEF IRN has four papers, all on computer: listening comprehension (20 min, multiple-choice questions), reading comprehension (30 min, multiple-choice questions), spoken expression (10 min, interview with an examiner on 2 topics) and written expression (30 min, 2 writing tasks). Total duration: 1h30 of actual test time, but allow half a day at the centre, as the speaking test is one-to-one and involves some waiting. The fee at the Mulhouse centre is €145, whatever the procedure. Results are sent by email by CCI Paris Île-de-France within a few days to one week.

How can I prepare for the TEF IRN?

Linguaphone offers TEF IRN preparation pathways in Mulhouse in French as a Foreign Language (FLE), one-to-one or in small groups, with qualified FLE trainers. Depending on your starting level, expect 20 to 60 hours of preparation. The course is eligible for CPF funding (capped at €1,500 for languages, with a €150 personal contribution), and sitting the test can be funded together with it. It can also be covered by your OPCO or France Travail. The test alone, however, cannot be funded by the CPF. A free placement test is run before you start.

What is the difference between the TEF IRN and the DELF?

The TEF IRN is the test specifically intended for administrative procedures (naturalisation, residence, integration). It is a certificate, valid for 2 years, assessing levels A1 to B2. The DELF (Diplôme d'Études en Langue Française) is a diploma from the French Ministry of Education, valid for life. For a French nationality application, which has required B2 since 1 January 2026, both the TEF IRN and the DELF are accepted. The TEF IRN is generally quicker to obtain and is taken in a single half-day.
